A cross-country road trip with your family in tow is a grand adventure from the moment you leave the driveway. There’s all the fun moments in the car…car snacks, playlists, the beloved car tag game. There’s all the moments along the way…picnic lunches at rest stops, spur-of-the-moment pit stops, roadside scenic overlooks. And of course, there’s the destination.

The destination is the icing on the cake! All of the patience, traveling, and – let’s be honest – work that you’ve put in finally pays off as arrive at your desired destination.

But what if there was, well, one extra layer of icing on the cake? Who would say “no” to more icing?

What if you not only had all the fun moments in the car, the fun moments along the way, and the destination, but your family also had a special tradition that you carried out on your road trip?

This is not a list of destinations or the purpose of the road trip…rather, it is a list of fun things that you make it a point to do along the way. It’s so fun for the kids to be able to say that “we are a road trip family and we ALWAYS do ____________ along the way!”


Fun Traditions To Include On Your Road Trip:

  1. Include at least one professional sporting event on your road trip.

2. Make a stop at a theme park or water park.

3. Make it a point to pull over at road side oddities.

4. Stop at AT LEAST one ice cream shop a day!

5. Visit old fashioned drive-in movie theaters.

6. Find and drive over as many scary bridges as possible!

7. Take a picture at every scenic overlook that you can find.

8. Eat picnic lunches at rest stops along the way.

9. Pull over and take a family picture every time you enter a new state.

10. And our personal favorite: stop at every skate park that you can!


Road trips are a unique and very special opportunity to be with your family constantly – there’s literally no escape! – and make incredible memories together. The more layers of “special” that you can logistically and wisely add to your trip, the more fulfillment you will return home with.
