A funny thing happens as you take more and more road trips across America. The country starts to feel smaller. Not in a bad way, as if you were disappointed or needed more. Rather, it just starts to feel like a cross-country drive isn’t quite the impossible task that maybe it once seemed to be. What once seemed so intimidating, like getting all the way across Texas, or like getting from the Rockies to the Smokies, somehow feel less daunting, less far, after each road trip that you take.
And the truth is, a trek across our glorious country (or at least part of it) isn’t impossible at all, even if you have a short window of time to make it happen.
Every now and then, the coveted Three-Day-Weekend graces us with its presence. And when it does, everyone is wondering the same thing…”What should we do??” “Where should we go?” “Should we get ahead in our housework or do something fun??”
Whether you’re feeling productive or adventurous is totally up to you, BUT if you’re feeling the latter, Memory Bank Road Trips has some suggestions!
Three days is just enough time to do something and go somewhere special. Perhaps even a little crazy. Like drive REALLY far, look at something REALLY cool, and drive REALLY far a different route home. With eating and sleeping along the way, of course.
It sounds nuts, rash, and way too spontaneous…and Memory Bank definitely doesn’t recommend doing this every weekend. But sometimes, a long car ride to experience an iconic American site just needs to happen.
We have a list for you! This is your “Spontaneous Road Trip Over A Three-Day-Weekend” List. Will you be tired when you get home? Probably a little. Will you be behind in your chores? Probably a little. Will you be filled with incredible memories and funny stories? Absolutely!
So, without further ado – hopefully we’ve at least got you considering the 3-day insanity by now – here is Memory Bank Road Trips’ top recommendations for a quick road trip.
Draw a line going south from North Dakota to Texas…

If you live anywhere along or EAST of that line, consider one of
THESE AWESOME destinations:
- Mount Rushmore in South Dakota
- Niagara Falls in New York
- National Mall in Washington DC
- Biltmore Estate in North Carolina
- Three Sisters Springs in Florida
If you live anywhere WEST of that line, consider one of THESE AWESOME destinations:
- Hoover Dam in Nevada
- Grand Canyon in Arizona
- Big Sur Pacific Coast in California
- White Sands National Park in New Mexico
- Old Faithful in Wyoming
These stops are not meant to be extensive. You will spend the majority of your time getting there and very little time actually there. But that’s ok! You’ll get to see one of these incredible sites that every American should visit, and you will forever have the memories and funny stories to cherish.
