As much as our family loves our annual cross country road trip, we love looking forward to it nearly as much! It is so fun, so therapeutic, knowing that there is a big momentous event in our near future.
Maybe it’s knowing that soon there will be a complete and total interruption of our daily routine by something epic…maybe it’s looking forward to the sites and tastes of a radically different part of the country…maybe it’s anticipating the joy that comes with undisturbed time with my favorite people in the world.
Maybe it’s all of the above.
That anticipation that our family experiences as we eagerly await our next trip together is exactly why I keep a running list of the next 20 years’ worth of road trip destinations! I like knowing that, as much as a person can plan for the future, we have some wonderful and fun times awaiting us.
So, here it is…our family’s road trip bucket list that we want to share with you! Perhaps you’ve been to a few of these places yourself. Perhaps you’re wanting to start your own destination wish list. Either way, we hope that this list gets you thinking and dreaming about where you and your family could travel to together!
Road Trip Bucket List
- Fly to southern California, rent a car, and spend the next 10-14 days zigzagging back and forth while heading north. Hit up as many national parks as possible and drive along the Pacific Coast Highway.
- Take a national parks tour of Utah in the summer. Include a hike through The Narrows, a stop in Salt Lake City, bike riding in Moab, and taking in the views of Arches National Park and Monument Valley.
- Drive the 50-mile scenic “Going-To-The-Sun Road” through Glacier National Park in Montana. From there, head north to Banff National Park in Canada. Google these places! They look absolutely stunning!
- Take a tour of South Dakota! Starting at the Badlands in South Dakota, head west to Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Following the Black Hills Scenic Byway, head north towards North Dakota. Include a drive along the Needles Scenic Highway and stops in Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Deadwood.
- Experience a Fall Foliage tour in New England. Start in Maine, including a stop in picturesque Bar Harbor, and head through New Hampshire and Vermont. Make sure to check out the maple syrup and apple farms!
I love to daydream about experiencing these places with our family. Lord willing, we will have the time and means over the years to pack up the car and head off into the sunset on a grand adventure with our kids.
